Exploratorium 1/26

San Francisco has plenty of 18+ and 21+ events on Thursday evenings, and the Exploratorium is just one of the venues. Located at Pier 15 with 75,000 square feet of things to explore, we spent the evening learning about strange phenomena and art, as well as interacting with hundreds of fun and mind-bending exhibitions. It is incredibly lively at night, with many other young adults there enjoying their evening from opening (6pm) all the way to closing (10pm). There were drinks provided at the various pop-up bars scattered about, and a DJ playing music throughout the night.

Something unique about this night was the last night of the Ice Stories exhibit. There were plenty of exhibitions all in line with the theme of Antarctic ice, studying the properties of ice, and the effects of climate change on Antarctic ice sheets. There was an outdoor show we saw called Flaming Ice where Eric Muller (Exploratorium Educator) showcased the properties of dry ice, how it burns, and its relationship with carbon. Alongside the other exhibits of optical illusions, colorful floor tiles, and dissected cow eyes, Ice Stories was an interesting addition to explore.

It was a wonderful experience being able to relax and have fun after a long day in studio with all of our friends and classmates.

ELOISE: “I really liked the alternating hot and cold coils! It made me realize how much information our brain fills in (sometimes incorrectly!). It was definitely something I’d never experienced before!”

IZZY: “My favorite exhibit was this large model made up of small sticks. It was just really inspiring to see the craftsmanship and how whimsical architecture and model making can be.”

LOLA: “I thought the illusion exhibits were really fun! It was cool to see real-life examples of how proportion and scale can effect what the user sees.”
